# Equipment

Besides their seaworthy vessel, each pirate is equipped with a Spyglass, which can be used to ensure land is safe before approach. One also receives a Surveyor compass, which can be used to [navigate](/sea-of-steves/gameplay/navigation.md) toward the nearest Village island. Any useful items that you may come across in your travels, such as food or a Shield, may be placed in your off-hand at any time.

Although not the default, a Pickaxe can be enabled to add a traditional mining experience. However, you'll have to give up another item for a free hotbar slot.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="danger" %}
As of Minecraft 1.21.4, the Surveyor will not point to the nearest Village due to a bug. Players will be shown the distance in blocks to help locate the island. Please follow [this Mojira issue](https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC/issues/MC-279423) for now. A workaround exists [here](https://github.com/PaperMC/Paper/issues/12211).
