One also receives a Surveyor, which can be used to navigate toward the nearest Village island. Any useful items that you may come across in your travels, such as food or a Shield, may be placed in your off-hand at any time.

Although not the default, a Pickaxe can be enabled to add a traditional mining experience. However, you'll have to give up another item for a free hotbar slot.
